Malaysia to launch One Million Safe Schools and Hospitals and Making Resilient Cities Campaign in February 2011

The national launch of the One Million Safe Schools and Hospitals and the Making Resilient Cities will be organized by the Government of Malaysia on 17-18 February 2011 at Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC) in connection with the National Disaster Awareness Day 2011 and the ASEAN Regional Workshop for Mainstreaming Disaster Risk Reduction in Education.  The Prime Minster of Malaysia, Y.A.B. Dato’s Sri Mohd Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak will give official remarks at the event while Ministers of Education and Public Health will pledge for safe schools and hospitals. This two day event will see a panel discussion on important issues in disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation in Malaysia such as a review of the national disaster management policy and mechanisms, the implementation of the Hyogo Framework of Action and UNISDR Global Campaigns and disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation in national physical planning and township policy including for World Heritage City like the Melaka.  At the parallel sessions, hundreds of participants from national agencies and local governments and municipalities will discuss the role of local authorities in disaster risk reduction, hospitals safe from disasters and detailed improvements of national mechanisms for disaster management. The ASEAN Regional Workshop for Mainstreaming Disaster Risk Reduction in Education will bring together focal points from the education sector and national disaster management offices of ASEAN countries to share experiences in this area and discuss the preparation of ASEAN guidelines for mainstreaming DRR in education sector. On-line pledging for safer schools and hospitals will happen throughout the two day event.
