Philippines commits to safe schools, hospitals

MANILA, Philippines -- In the wake of recent floods and landslides in the Philippines, the government reconfirmed its commitment to make more than 60,000 schools and hospitals safer during disasters. At a ceremony to launch UNISDR “Making Cities Resilient: My City Is Getting Ready!” Campaign at East Rembo Elementary School in Makati City, 20 Metro Manila mayors also signed up in support of the campaign.

Bangkok – The Thai Government today launched the “One Million Safe Schools and Hospitals” initiative in Bangkok, with top government officials from the Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministries of Education, Public Health and Interior and partner agencies promising to make safety a priority at 43,004 schools and hospitals.

Karachi, MTT News Desk: "Unsafe schools are serious issue, which had never been taken into consideration. That was the reason that in 2010 Floods and 2005 Earthquake the school buildings were badly affected seriously disrupting education of millions of children.
